Build Regional Transportation Now
With a provincial election behind us and municipal elections just around the corner, the Board releases, Build Regional Transportation Now, the latest report in our Think Twice, Vote Once – Decision 2014 campaign. Much has changed since the Board launched our campaign in January, but getting the Toronto region moving again remains a top priority for Members and the public.
Each day, millions of people move across the Toronto region to work, study, shop and entertain. Yet getting to one's destination is often an exercise in frustration and stress, due to our clogged roadways and crammed transit systems. This massive movement of people across municipal boundaries demonstrates that this is a regional problem, requiring regional solutions. Urban regions the world over are successfully planning and delivering transportation solutions at a metropolitan level. We can get it right too.
Unquestionably, some progress has been made in our region to advance regional solutions to our transportation challenges. The development of, The Big Move, the region's transportation plan, is a notable milestone. Yet, this and other projects are only a small down payment toward a more fully built out and integrated transportation system.
Our report identifies that getting the region back on track and into the 21st century will not be easy. It will require a bold vision, based on what the Board believes are three critical and interrelated pillars of public transportation.
- Evaluating plans based on solid business criteria
- Integrating transportation systems into one seamless network
- Clarifying accountability and de-politicization of decision making
The stakes are high. The investments we make today will shape the future prosperity and quality of life of the Toronto region. The time to build regional transportation is now!We invite you to read the full report to learn more about how we can get our region moving again.
