Policy Working Groups 2007–2008 

The Toronto Board of Trade has seven policy working groups which meet regularly to discuss and make recommendations on major areas that affect Toronto's business community. These groups are:

TASK FORCES

Electricity Task Force
Advocate for more competitive and lower cost electricity and make recommendations to the provincial government on the future production and distribution of electricity in Ontario.

STANDING COMMITTEES

Business Affairs Committee
Develop policy positions to promote a healthy and competitive environment for business by advocating for effective reform in areas including: commercial, corporate, securities, competition, insurance, e-business, intellectual property, labour relations and employment law.

Economic Development Committee
Will identify public policy initiatives that should be pursued to encourage economic growth, increase commercial development and multi-sectoral investment - ultimately growing job prospects, productivity and contributing to an overall increased quality-of-life in the city - across all globally competitive industries.  It will also examine the existing structure of municipal, regional, provincial and federal economic development in the Toronto region and advocate and develop action-oriented recommendations, where necessary, for reform.

Infrastructure Committee
Develop policy positions and advocate for strong infrastructure important to Toronto’s economic competitiveness. The main focus of the Committee is on transportation infrastructure (excluding Airports) but may also include other forms such as water and wastewater.  The committee will identify project-financing mechanisms including opportunities for public private partnerships.

Municipal Affairs Committee
Advocate for policies, legislation and activities at the municipal level conducive to:  the profitable operation of private enterprises; sound budgeting and financial planning of the city and its agencies; a moderated regulatory environment for business; and , effective governance in Toronto and across the GTA.  Major projects include the development of the Board's municipal pre-budget submission and advocacy work and policy development on business property taxes.

Planning and Development Committee
Develop policy positions and advocate for reform on planning and development issues in Toronto and the GTA including: the Planning Act, Growth Plan for the Greater Golden Horseshoe, as well as Urban Design issues amongst other planning and development industry issues.

Taxation Committee
Develop policy positions on taxation, including application, cost, simplicity and technical aspects of federal and provincial taxation.
