Scorecard On Prosperity 2011 -
Toronto Region Moves To Number Eight From Fourth

The Board proudly launched our third edition of Scorecard On Prosperity
2011, in the Globe and Mail. Developed with
support from Certified Management Accountants of Ontario, the
Scorecard benchmarks the Toronto Census Metropolitan Area (CMA) against
23 other metropolitan areas around the world, on issues related to the
economy and labour attractiveness.
There is no doubt a sense of cautious optimism is in the air as we
proceed through 2011. However, the results of this latest Scorecard
confirm and deepen our understanding of where Toronto fits in the
constellation of global metropolises; namely, an urban region marked by
strong fundamentals in labour attractiveness but struggling with
long-term economic performance.
The Scorecard was designed to provide strategic insight to Board
members on the economic indicators where we are succeeding, and those
areas that signal need for improvement. We hope you find it an
informative gauge of the region’s current business environment and
a practical tool to inspire change.
What Is The Board Recommending To Improve The Region’s
Performance?
- Increase investment in productivity-enhancing machinery and
equipment, buildings and infrastructure and remove structural barriers
to venture capital investment.
- Invest in more commuter rail infrastructure in order to lower
commute times and improve economic efficiency.
- Support key economic clusters (such as life sciences, information
and communications technology, etc.) where Toronto has a competitive
advantage with a combination of private investment and public policy
action.
What emerges from this year’s study is a clearer sense of the
direction the region must take to position itself for long-term,
sustainable, economic growth. In short, we need a coordinated strategy
that leverages our economic strengths and potential.
