Municipal candidates who focus their platform on good economic policy will encourage more Torontonians to vote and, in turn, win more votes for themselves, suggest the results of a new poll released August 27 by the Toronto Board of Trade. The poll is part of the fourth theme of the Board of Trade’s VoteToronto2010.com campaign, improving civic democracy

“This is an important survey that demonstrates for the first time in memory that municipal voters are putting the economy as their top ballot consideration,” said Carol Wilding, President and CEO of the Toronto Board of Trade. “Torontonians understand that City Hall is very important to their economic livelihood.  There is an opportunity here for candidates to rise to the challenge, improve Toronto’s economy and win voter support.”

Toronto registered voter turnouts of only 39.3 per cent in 2006 and 38 per cent in 2003. This poll indicates that many undecided voters could be swayed by a strong focus on economic development and job creation. Candidates should have no doubt about what voters are now telling them.

Part of the framework for a better city

Growing the city's and the region's economy is the second of four themes the Board is exploring in depth throughout the months leading up to the 2010 municipal election. Based on extensive consultations with members and stakeholders, the Board of Trade released a discussion paper in the fall of 2009 entitled Vote Toronto 2010: Framework for a Better City. This discussion paper articulates four key election themes that matter not only to business but also to all citizens of our great city:

•   Fixing the City’s finances
•   Growing the city and the regional economy
•   Improving civic democracy
•   Promoting social cohesion and economic inclusion

What's next?
Over the coming months, the Board will release more discussion papers on all of the themes outlined above. The Board is using these disussion papers as launching points for consultations and discussions with members, experts, candidates and the public. Well in advance of the election, we will distill the ideas into a series of recommendations that will help address these issues in a meaningful way that will benefit all Torontonians.
